Atmosphere: From the Blue Marble
Atmosphere is a series of photographs using multiple images of the sky to explore color, light, space, and the skies atmospheric qualities.
“In my country in August there’s a peculiar quality to light….” William Faulkner
When I moved to Alabama from the North East, I observed a place where the history culture and politics had an impact on the look of the place. I also observed magnificent skies and Faulkner’s peculiar quality of light, leading me to photograph the light and the sky.
In 1972 a member of the crew of Apollo 17 spacecraft took a photograph of the Earth, on its way to the moon. It was the first clear image of the fully illuminated Earth. From deep space the earth appeared to the astronauts as a small blue marble. I remember seeing this photograph and realizing that the earth did not look like my schoolroom globe but had this wonderful swirling atmosphere. The photographs in this series are colored by knowing there is a view of the sky from the other side as if I am photographing from the blue marble.
